    • Wee Camp
      (Preschool)
      Monday-Thursday morning camp that allows kids to explore the wonders of nature, make arts and crafts, play with friends, and exercise with lots of dancing, games and giggles. Located at the Carleton Arboretum.
    • Prairie & Wood Camp
      (Entering Grades K-5)
      Weekly morning camp giving kids a chance to explore Carleton’s Arboretum as they learn, play, and create. Located at the Carleton Arboretum.
    • Y Navigator Camp
      (Entering Grades K-3)
      Choose from 3, 4 or 5 days a week – one week or all summer long. Join us for days filled with creativity, laughter, friendship and belonging.
    • Tween Extreme Camp
      (Entering Grades 4-7)
      Now expanded to include 7th Grade campers! 3, 4 or 5 days a week options, with fun just for our older campers!
    • Counselor In Training
      (Entering Grades 8-10)
      Counselors-in-Training or “CITs” are participants entering grades 8 – 10 or up to age 15 who are looking for leadership experience and will learn the specific skills needed for working with kids and co-workers through hands-on experiences in our camps.

      Hosted by the Red Wing YMCA, traditional, specialty and trail and trips camps.

Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Creates a welcoming and safe environment for all members of all backgrounds and abilities. Promote a positive, professional and welcoming atmosphere by providing excellent service to all Y and community members and guests. Responds to membership and program needs, promotes memberships, programs and services and maintains cleanliness and organization of the front desk and lobby area. Enthusiastically greets customers, answer questions and provides facility tours as needed.


Essential Functions

  1. Greets and assists at the front desk in a courteous, professional and friendly manner. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members and program participants.  Strive to enrich their Y experience by introducing them to new programs, staff, other members and volunteer activities.
  2. Answer the telephone, provide requested information, direct calls and take accurate messages.
  3. Provide the benefits of becoming a member and give facility tours, explaining the Y mission, volunteer opportunities and scholarships available.
  4. Respond to member and guest needs. Contact appropriate personnel when necessary.  Handle complaints in a courteous manner.  Effectively negotiate and resolve customer service problems.
  5. Schedule reservations, provide rental information and sell Y merchandise.
  6. Process participant program registrations, to include membership sign-up and issues new member ID cards.
  7. Handle potential new member phone inquiries using Y best practices.
  8. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  9. Handle membership and program paperwork and administrative tasks.
  10. Attends all staff meetings.

Required Qualifications

Accurately assesses personal feelings, strengths and limitations and how they impact relationships. Preferred Qualifications

  1. Strong communication, customer service and problem solving skills.
  2. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  3. Previous customer service, sales or related experience.
  4. Ability to actively listen.
  5. Self-started, able to handle multiple tasks under limited supervision, work well in a team setting and be detailed oriented.
  6. Experience and knowledge with computers.
  7. Cash handling skills and the ability to reconcile shift transactions accurately.
  8. Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/AED, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention.

Note: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk and handle computer controls quickly so as to process needs timely.

The mission of the Northfield Area Family YMCA is to build strong kids, strong families and a stronger community. Since 2005, the Northfield Y has served thousands of youth, families and individuals in the community through its full slate of annual programming, camps, youth sports and fitness offerings utilizing numerous locations. In August 2014, a brand new facility opened to serve our community.  The facility includes an indoor pool, a full service wellness center to include cardio and strength equipment, fitness studio and personal training, child watch (babysitting), locker rooms and a large community multi-purpose room.

Our community has two high quality private colleges, St. Olaf and Carleton, and a highly rated public school system with charter and private options available as well. The Cannon River flows through the city providing picturesque beauty all year round giving that small town feel (pop: 20,000) though just a hop-skip and a jump from the Twin Cities. Northfield is 30 miles south of Minneapolis or 25 driving miles from Burnsville.
