Why did you choose to become a member of the Northfield YMCA?
Our family decided to join the YMCA to take advantage of all of the different activities that are offered. One of the biggest reasons was the Y day camps for our daughters to participate in during the summer and on days off from school. The Wellness Center was also a factor, with the nice equipment, classes and child care while you workout.
What was your health/wellness/fitness situation before coming to the YMCA?
I was always pretty active growing up and participated in all kinds of sports. Once I reached my thirties my somewhat active lifestyle stalled. I became overweight and unmotivated to do anything about it.
What are your wellness/fitness goals?
Losing weight and keeping it off. Once I finally realized that I was not living the healthiest lifestyle, something clicked (maybe turning 40) that I needed to do something to get back on track. 250 pounds was way too heavy for me. I started watching what I ate, walked and eventually started running. The pounds began coming off. After about seven months I was down 75 pounds.
What are your favorite fitness activities?
Running. This is strange to me since I never enjoyed it before I got back in shape. It has pretty much become an obsession. I am now running six days a week. I ran Grandma’s Marathon last year and I am planning to run two or three marathons this year.
What is your inspiration/motivation to get to the YMCA?
To keep striving to keep off the weight I lost. Also, to show my kids how important it is to live a healthy and active lifestyle. The YMCA does a great job at promoting this cause. My daughters especially enjoy participating in the Y Kids Tri.
What do you enjoy most about your YMCA experience?
The Wellness Center is a great place to run on extremely cold winter days and to get in my strength workouts. The staff is always very nice and willing to help out with anything you need.
Our family is really looking forward to the opening of the YMCA facility – it will be so nice having the majority of the activities under one roof.
How has being a member of the YMCA impacted you and your family?
The biggest impact has been on my daughters. They have been going to the Y camps for a couple of years and have made great friendships with both the staff and fellow campers. We also participated in the Jingle Bell Run this past December and plan to make it an annual family event. It is great fundraiser for the YMCA.

What do you enjoy most about living in Northfield?
The small town community is great for raising a family. There are a lot of local activities and not too far to drive if you need your big city experience.
