Do you have a Y personal story?
My personal Y story began ~seven years ago when, in its’ infancy, my husband, Bryan, began serving on the Northfield YMCA Board. His enthusiasm for helping to get a YMCA in Northfield was infectious. Through many conversations with Bryan along the way about progress being made and hearing of the dedication of all those involved & committed to the process, I, too, became so excited about the possibility of a Y coming to fruition in Northfield. Northfield is an ideal community for a YMCA. When I was offered the opportunity to serve on the Y Board, I jumped at the chance.
Who is the Northfield Y for and what purpose(s) will it serve?
The Northfield Y is for everyone who seeks community connectedness, physical fitness, family health or, simply, opportunities to try new activities. While improved physical health and emotional well being are primary reasons to participate in a YMCA, the additional benefit of connecting with others in our community is huge.
What impact do you see the Y having on the overall physical and preventative health initiatives in our community?
The Y will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the overall physical health of our community. Currently, there are many who do not have access to a center for wellness/fitness – perhaps due to cost, lack of child-care or other barriers. The Y has the capacity to reach out to these folks. While the Y is truly for everyone, it is unique in that it provides a place for not just adults but for families to exercise together.
What are the ways you see the Y being a good partner in your line of work?
I am a physical therapist and work with people of all ages with various joint and muscle injuries. Exercise is a keystone of the rehab process. I am excited for the YMCA to open up, because as a continuation of their personal rehab, my clients need a place to continue exercising on their own. Having a public pool is also a huge added benefit, particularly for individuals who have so much pain the pool may be their only option for exercising.
Why do you support the Y (in programs, partnerships, financial contributions, membership, etc)?
My husband and I support the Y financially, because we support everything it stands for and all that it will provide for Northfield and the larger community. Honestly, I can’t think of a reason to not support the Y.
Why is it important for people in our community to make a pledge to the Y Capital Campaign?
So many individuals and businesses in Northfield have demonstrated their support to the Y through generous financial contributions in these early phases of development. It is through these contributions that the Y has broken ground and started building. This is an exciting time! We need to keep the momentum going so that Phase I can move seamlessly into Phase II – so that we can build the gym space along with the first phase. Grassroots donations at any level help.
