daddy daughter danceThere isn’t a dad around who doesn’t think of his daughter as his little sweetheart. And now there’s a fun way for fathers to celebrate that special relationship.

The Northfield Area Family YMCA is hosting its first Daddy Daughter Dance, from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at the Armory. The evening will include dancing, dance lessons, refreshments, pictures, door prizes and a chance to learn more about other YMCA activities and programs throughout the year. Admission is $20 per couple, with a $5 charge for each additional child, for Y members. Non-members pay $26 per couple and $8 for each additional child. Fast, easy registration is available online. Simply click the “Online Registration” button to the left.

This event is patterned after a dance that has been a huge success for 18 years in Wausau, Wis., where the YMCA draws more than 1,000 dads and daughters for an evening of dancing and fun each February. Y leaders here are starting small, but hope to make this an annual community event.

Daddy Daughter Dance is a great chance for dads and daughters to learn some basic dance steps, and for fathers like me to get to know each other, says Chris Sorenson, a member of the Y board of directors. Chris has a personal interest as well and he plans to bring his two oldest daughters, Liv and Marta, to the event and has invited his friends to bring their daughters as well.

The event is open to girls of all ages, but is expected to appeal most to those ages 3-12. Grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers, big brothers and others also are invited to be escorts.

There will be open dancing throughout the evening, but those who wish will be able to take some basic lessons in the waltz, cha-cha and swing dance. There will be punch and light refreshments, and each family will receive a personal photo.
