The YMCA is pleased to announce a new collaboration with the Northfield Senior Center!
Important note: All swim programs (below) are open to Northfield YMCA Members Only (sorry, no community members or members from other YMCAs). “Family Swim” is open to Northfield YMCA members with a Family Membership only. The YMCA pays a fee/per person, per/visit for use of the swimming pool. Your monthly membership fee contributes to the financial cost of using the pool.
1) Open Swim for YMCA Members 18 years and older!Swimming is very good exercise and involves the use of almost all the muscles required for movement, without the weight of your body pounding you with each move like when you are walking or running.
- Water resistance is greater than air resistance, so that the muscles have to work harder.
- Regular swimming will build your muscle strength, endurance, and cardio-vascular fitness. The longer you swim, the more your endurance and speed will improve.
- Without overworking the heart, swimming improves the body’s use of oxygen and increases lung function.
- Swimming stimulates circulation.
- Swimming promotes proper breathing.
- Swimming helps to combat the aging process.
- Swimming burns calories at about 3 calories a mile per pound of bodyweight and improves one’s ability to control and maintain a healthy weight.
- Swimming is fantastic for toning the upper arms, shoulders and legs. The best strokes for whole body toning are the freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. The pool at the Northfield Senior Center is 4 feet deep on one end and 5 feed deep on the other. 22 laps = 1/2 mile!

3) Aqua Fitness Classes (Water Exercise)!Water exercise is an excellent way to cross-train in or as a mode of exercise for the beginner or for the person with a chronic condition. Water exercise is an excellent modality to develop a comprehensive fitness, routine. Water is an ideal place to Take the First Step to health and fitness because it can be adapted and modified to the individual depending upon their particular needs. The beauty of water exercise is that it can provide a strenuous work-out for the elite athlete or can be tailored to meet the needs of the novice. Water is a perfect place for the person who has joint problems to start exercising in because it allows the effects of gravity to be diminished and allows movements to occur that would be painful and difficult on land. For the injured runner it allows them to maintain their aerobic function while not causing further damage. Deep water running has proven very successful to many world class athletes who have overuse injuries.
